1. Who we are
This website is run by SCS Thirsk (S Calvert & Sons), a scrap metal recycling business based at Junction Works, Carlton Miniott, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, YO7 4LX. We are the “data controller” for the personal information described in this policy.
2. What information we collect
When you contact us
If you use the contact form on this website, we collect your name, email address, phone number (if you give it), the type of enquiry and your message. We also receive any details you choose to send us by phone, email or WhatsApp.
When you sell scrap metal to us
The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 requires us to check the identity of everyone who sells us scrap metal and to keep records of each transaction. This includes your name, address, photo ID details, a description of the metal, and payment details for bank transfers or cheques. These records may be inspected by the police and local authority.
When you browse this website
We count visits to the website using a privacy-friendly analytics tool that runs on our own website. It does not use cookies, does not track you across other websites and does not identify you personally. It only tells us things like which pages are popular.
To protect our contact form from spam, we use Cloudflare Turnstile. It checks that the form is being filled in by a person rather than an automated program. To do this, Cloudflare processes technical information about your browser and device.
3. How we use your information and why
- To reply to your enquiry and give you prices, arrange collections or skips. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in responding to people who contact us, and taking steps at your request before entering into a contract.
- To buy scrap metal from you and pay you by bank transfer or cheque. Our lawful basis is performing our contract with you.
- To keep the records required by law under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. Our lawful basis is legal obligation.
- To keep this website secure and working, including blocking spam. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests.
We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for marketing unless you have asked us to.
4. Who we share it with
We only share your information with trusted companies that help us run our business and this website, and only as much as they need:
- Hostinger: hosts this website, including stored contact form messages.
- GoDaddy: provides our business email, which receives contact form messages.
- Cloudflare: provides the spam check on our contact form.
- Google: provides the map on our website, but only if you choose to load it (see Cookies below).
- Our bank: processes payments we make to you.
- The police or local authority: where the law requires us to.
Some of these companies may process data outside the UK. Where they do, they are required to protect it to UK standards.
5. How long we keep it
- Contact form enquiries are kept for up to 12 months, then deleted, unless they lead to ongoing business with you.
- Scrap metal transaction records are kept for as long as the law requires.
6. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, and to ask us to correct it, delete it, or restrict or object to how we use it. To make a request, email mail@scsrecycling.co.uk or call 01845 522566. We will respond within one month. Some records, such as those required by the Scrap Metal Dealers Act, cannot be deleted while we are legally required to keep them.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please contact us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
7. Cookies
Cookies are small files that websites store on your device. We keep cookies to a minimum and do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
Cookies we always use (essential)
These are needed for the website to work and cannot be switched off:
- Your cookie choice: remembers whether you chose “Essential only” or “Accept all”, so we do not ask on every page. It is stored in your browser until you clear it.
- Spam protection (Cloudflare Turnstile): on the contact page only, used to check that form submissions come from a person.
- Website login: only used if you are a website administrator logging in.
Cookies we only use with your permission
- Google Maps: if you choose “Accept all”, we show a Google map of our yard. Google may set its own cookies when the map loads. See Google’s Privacy Policy. If you choose “Essential only”, the map is not loaded, and you can still get directions with the “Get Directions” links.
Changing your choice
You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. You can also delete or block cookies in your browser settings.
